I'm with you on the genres dying out, but there are still some great rock bands out there doing their thing and not sounding at all "PoP-ish". However, rock has gone for the most part political or Rap-Rock.

Personally, I'm a big fan of disturbed, System of a down, nonpoint, sevendust, slipknot...etc

What's wrong with Rap? Given I'm not a big fan of it myself, the rap that's not trying to be 'gansta' can be pretty good. The trick is to avoid all the pop rap; but it's been that case for a while now.

Not sure about music genres dieing though; but I'm not about to argue that. The music industry is in a massive decline though -- mostly due to their refusal to move onto newer distribution platforms; instead they still expect you to shell out 15$ for 9 songs on a CD, while spending millions of dollars in futile attempts to stop pirating.
