When we talk about Geartown's optional trigger effect to special summon an Ancient Gear monster, we're talking about an effect activates in the Graveyard, in response to that particular Geartown hitting the Graveyard after being destroyed from anywhere, and it doesn't care whether or not Geartown was most recently face-up on the field or not.
However, that Geartown's destruction needs to be the last thing to happen/event to occur, and this is where things can get tricky. The situations in Green will allow you to activate Geartown's effect, the situations in Red will not allow you to activate Geartown's effect, and the situations left in black (or whatever the skin uses by default) will not cause Geartown to leave the field.
If I control a Geartown (face-up or face-down), and I activate a new field spell card, my old one will be destroyed & sent to the Graveyard at the same time that costs would be paid. Now, since there's still an activation that needs to resolve, Geartown's optional trigger effect will miss the timing because having it hit the Graveyard wasn't the last thing to happen.
If I control a Geartown (face-up or face-down), and I set a new field spell card, my old one will be destroyed as soon as do. However, since there isn't an activation to resolve, Geartown's optional trigger effect doesn't miss the timing, and this is a very common play to see done because of it.
If I control a Geartown (face-up), and my opponent activates a new field spell card, mine isn't destroyed & sent to the Graveyard until after the new one has already resolved, so Geartown's optional trigger effect won't miss the timing here either.
If I control a Geartown (face-up), and my opponent sets a new field spell card, mine isn't destroyed & sent to the Graveyard at all, since there is only going to be 1 face-up/resolved field spell card on the field. There's no confliction here because Geartown stays on the field.

If you happen to use hand or card destruction, and it is sent to the gy. Its effect activates.

^Fail. Card Destruction and Hand Destruction have no word "destroy" anywhere in their card effect text. One has "discard", other has "send to Graveyard". No word "destroy". Geartown can only be destroyed in hand with Eradicator Epidemic Virus.
